A small but rapidly advancing GIS (Geographic Information Systems) department has an opportunity for a GIS Technician to support the GIS department Lead with map creation, management of mapping systems and data handling.

You will be required to create integral and informative mapping and data outputs for different departments, including: Design, Survey (including Drones), Cable Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, and Planning and Environmental. This position is multifaceted, and is a perfect opportunity to develop GIS skills in a wide range of different disciplines.
Due to the nature of this position, there is a chance you may be required to carry out site work as part of a team, which may involve short periods away from home.
This is an entry level opportunity. Although desirable, no previous experience is required and would suit a recent graduate with a basic understanding and interest in GIS.
The role:
Reporting to the GIS Department Lead, you will be responsible for map creation, reporting support, and data handling.
Key responsibilities:
- Supporting the department lead in organising, controlling and managing all GIS data
- Providing GIS drawing support to different departments with ArcGIS Pro
- Giving technical and organisational support to the department lead for Energyline’s online GIS platform for web and mobile mapping applications
- Creating, editing, and formatting spatial information
- Undertaking mapping requests from across the business
- Sourcing and preparing data to prepare graphics, metrics and standardised maps in order to help non-GIS users understand the data we are presenting
- Maintaining and updating datasets for use internally and externally
- Buying maps and sourcing third party data
Knowledge, Skills and Experience required:
Experience:
- Experience in Microsoft Excel (prolifient user level)
- Experience in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcMap, QGIS, SQL (beneficial, not essential)
Skills:
- Excellent computer skills
- Can adapt to new technologies easily
- Excellent technical knowledge or interest in GIS technologies and industry innovations
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills – both written and verbal
- Ability to work to deadlines
- Attention to detail, map design, and accuracy
- Innovative and creative
- Ability to prioritise workload and multi-task
- Resourceful
- Proactive and work using own initiative
- Willing to travel and work away from home when required (this will be very occasional and as part of a team)
- Driving license (desirable, not essential)
Qualifications:
Graduate entrants :
- Degree in any of the following or a related field : GIS, Geomatics, Surveying, Geography, Computer Science, Earth Science or Civil Engineering
Personal Attributes:
- Ability to work effectively with people across a wide range of levels and responsibilities
- Willingness to undertake appropriate training and courses in line with your level of experience
- Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing environments
- Eager to learn about GIS and develop skills in multiple software platforms
