Case Studies

Take a look at our previous projects
V-Route 132kV OHL Refurbishment (Borders)

Energyline performed as Principal Contractor for the management of extensive geotechnical investigation of an ~100km long overhead line in the Borders region, managing stringent environmental and grantor restrictions.

QB Project (Highlands Region)

Part of the design team tasked with foundation and civil infrastructure design for installation of prototype OHL support structures (NeSTs) in area of recent large scale slope instability.

AT Project (Somerset)

Geotechnical analysis and design of eight individual gravity pad foundations for a new 132kV OHL. Use of CPT constrained modulus profiling to develop parameters to provide accurate predictive settlements in thinly laminated soft cohesive tidal flats with shallow tidal water conditions.

Kinardochy Substation (Perth & Kinross)

Responsible for the design of staged ground investigation for the pre-construction stage tender design. The scope included development of an investigation strategy to allow for design of 25m deep rock slope designs in variably weathered neoproterozoic sequences, as well as a sampling and testing regime to allow for borrow material assessment for the proposed 20m high platform construction.

Corriegarth - Dunmaglass 132 kV New Build

In addition to supporting the delivery of this windfarm connection scheme for Scottish & Southern Energy from pre-construction through to post-construction ESQCR checks with comprehensive survey and design services, Energyline also provided an expert on site Engineer to advise on every step of the process.

Pole Line LV-66 kV

Energyline is currently assisting DNOs by providing survey and profiling services to support reinforcement and development schemes across their networks. We work closely with network planners and wayleave officers to turn their proposals into designs ready for construction.

Mybster – Shin Ground Investigation (Sutherland)

Management of three month Foundation Evaluation Study investigation phase to determine suitability of existing foundation on 100km OHL route on Scotland’s north-east coastal route.

Keadby Substation Reconfiguration

We were involved in developing both the cable route, outline and detailed design for construction for the 400 kV HVAC circuit. Supporting the development of the detailed design by completing and witnessing the required ground and site investigations. Following these investigations site specific cable and utility crossings were developed to ensure the design could operate unhindered. The design also had to incorporate the local environmental considerations. Finally, we completed the as built design pack and rating schedules for the route records.

Project VISTA (Visual Impact of Scottish Transmission Asset)

We were involved in multiple 132 kV schemes throughout Scotland assisting with feasibility studies for undergrounding sections of overhead line (OHL) to offer significant reductions in visual impact, while avoiding unwanted economic and environmental impacts. When feasibility had been assessed we developed both the routes and outline cable system design to provide a preferred design solution.

HVDC Western Link

This project comprised route design for the onshore southern cables which comprised circa 33 km of 600 kV DC cable and 4 km of 400 kV AC cable. We undertook the technical route development for both of these routes and the cable system design for the 400 kV AC route. Additionally, we carried out PM duties, tender evaluation, design assurance, and acting as cable technical lead throughout the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) process.

33KV Terminal Support Studies

Energyline has worked with WPD on the 11kV and 33kV distribution network that it operates. As part of an ongoing programme of works, a feasibility study was undertaken to assess a reconfiguration and potential reutilisation of an existing, aged, 33kV lattice steel terminal support, and to assess the pros and cons of replacement with an equivalent 33kV wood pole support.

Skye Reinforcement

Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) were assessing the existing 132kV Quoich to Broadford (QB) overhead line for reutilisation, as part of the larger Skye Reinforcement Project. Energyline were engaged to undertake pertinent studies and surveys to inform the assessment of existing lattice steel towers.
